Membership

The society has about 75 members drawn from all over the country. We welcome new members from novice upwards who are invited to join on a provisional basis for six months while becoming known. They may then seek election to full membership.

Couples who are joint members will receive only one copy of club publications.
Associate membership provides copies of club publications but no other facilities. Temporary membership is available to provide cottage visitors with public liability insurance for surface activities, if they require it.

Insurance

Public Liability Insurance (PLI) is now required by some landowners for access to caves on their land. In Wales the only cave requiring it is Dan-yr-Ogof. PLI provides cover for damage or injury that you accidentally cause to something or somebody else. This never used to be necessary, but we now live in an ever more litigious and nasty world. So far there have been no cases of cavers trying to sue one another, but this has happened in the rock climbing world and one drunk mountaineer even sued his club for falling out of a top bunk. Sometimes it is not the member but the relatives who sue after a serious accident.

PLI is bought via the British Caving Association. Basic cover for surface activities, such as mountain walking to look at cave entrances or using the cottage, is included in the normal club subscriptions. You are strongly recommended to purchase underground cover at an additional annual premium of £10 per person to be paid along with the appropriate subscription to the club treasurer if you intend to venture underground.
